UPCOMING UMN SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOAL INITIATIVE WEBINAR

Clean Water and Sanitation: Water Access in Minnesota Communities

Tremendous progress has been made nationally and globally in increasing access to clean drinking water and sanitation, however access to safe, potable water is still a challenge in some communities in the US and Minnesota. The COVID-19 pandemic has clearly demonstrated the critical importance of sanitation, hygiene and adequate access to clean water for the prevention of diseases. Hand hygiene according to the World Health Organization, is one of the most effective actions that can be taken to reduce the spread of pathogens and prevent infections, including the COVID-19 virus. Yet access to clean and safe water is not available to all.

In this fifth webinar of a series on issues related to the Sustainable Development Goals, a panel of community-engaged scholars and practitioners representing a range of perspectives from across Minnesota communities will offer examples and insights on where progress is being made and where more work is needed. Comments and discussion will focus on aspects of this SDG’s targets, including:

  • achieve universal and equitable access to safe and affordable drinking water

  • achieve access to adequate and equitable sanitation and hygiene for all

  • improve water quality

  • protect and restore water-related ecosystems

  • support and strengthen the participation of local communities in improving water and sanitation management

Panelists:

  • Erik Dahl, Planning Director, Environmental Quality Board (EQB)

  • Nancy Schuldt, Water Projects Coordinator, Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa’s

  • Shane Stennes, Director of Sustainability for the University of Minnesota

Moderators:

  • Karen Brown, PhD, Co-Lead UMN Sustainable Development Goals Initiative, University of Minnesota

  • Katey Pelican, DVM, PhD, Co-Lead UMN Sustainable Development Goals Initiative, University of Minnesota

  • Jeff Standish, PhD, Industry Liaison MnDRIVE Environment, University of Minnesota

This webinar was hosted by the MNDrive Environment and the University of Minnesota Sustainable Development Goal Initiative in partnership with the Office for Public Engagement.
